9) Don’t Hop into Any Old Taxi

Most people wouldn’t think of hailing a cab as a dangerous activity. And usually it’s not. The tricky part in Mexico is knowing which cab to get into. There are two different types of taxis in Mexico; those who are licensed and those who are not. Licensed taxis use the official taxi stands and have picture ID on the windshield. These drivers are held accountable and are trackable, so it’s not likely you’ll experience any funny business. Just make sure to agree on a price before setting off. The taxis you want to avoid are the ones not officially marked and appear to be private cars. Getting into one of these could put you in a dangerous situation. In the past, Mexico had a bad reputation for running taxi scams, ending in kidnappings and robberies. While this has cooled off now, it’s still better to err on the side of caution.
