What would someone who lived in the Industrial Age think about the way we live today? Technology is everywhere today and to someone from that era it would seem like magic. All the information you could ever need at your fingertips. Do you know who else thinks it’s magic? The cyber thieves who target people every day over “free wi-fi”. It’s not really free though if your money, personal information or identity are stolen from you. Ang, can hack your system gaining access to everything online that makes you, you. Your email, persnyone with the right software and the ability to use it within range of the “free wi-fi” you’re enjoyional photos, bank accounts, credit cards, SSN, your very identity can be taken with a few key strokes. So be careful. Saving money on your data usage by using “free wi-fi” can cost you everything.
1) The Man in the Middle Attack
The simplest explanation of this is information is intercepted between your device and the wi-fi access point you are using, making the victim’s device think the hacker is the access point. A Man in the Middle attack is a method of eavesdropping to gain enough of your information to steal what they want from you. Free wi-fi is an all you can eat buffet for cyber criminals and they count on the fact that most free wi-fi networks are unencrypted. So, they have little or no problem inserting themselves between you and where you think you’re connected to. You can protect yourself against this and other intrusions by setting up a VPN (Virtual Private Network) on your computer. Allowing you to securely access a private network and share data remotely through public networks. Much like a firewall protects your data on your computer, VPNs protect it online.
