10) Naica Mine and Crystal Caves, Mexico

This sight will amaze even those who are difficult to impress. In Chihuahua, Mexico, the Naica Mine sits 300 meters deep and houses some enormous natural gypsum crystals. The Cave of Crystals (AKA Giant Crystal Caves) is another cave connected to the Naica Mine, laying claim to the largest natural (gypsum) crystals ever found. The biggest crystal on record is 12 meters and weighs 55 tons! The temperature in these caves reaches upwards of 138 degrees Fahrenheit, therefore geologists can only spend 10 minutes at a time inside. The haphazard crisscross angles of the crystals remain a mystery as to why they grew this way. Whatever the reason, it certainly makes for some dramatic, never-before seen, photos. Interestingly, the crystals were discovered purely by accident during a mining expedition for lead, zinc, and silver. However, mining here has since been banned due to the discovery.
