Don’t get lazy and promise yourself you won’t get hungry on the journey. You will, and you’ll end up buying something extravagantly overpriced at an airport out of desperation. Pack travel-friendly snacks like nuts, dried fruit, pretzels, string cheese, and granola bars. These snacks travel well (i.e. don’t get squished and make a mess, such as a banana), are relatively healthy, and will help you to resist the urge to buy food at the airport. Additionally, it’s a good alternative to plane food, which is packed with sodium and empty calories (and not very tasty). TSA will even allow you to take fruit, like apples and oranges through security. Another must have item in this category is a refillable water bottle. You’ll notice that many airports have drinking fountains or water-refill stations. Save money and stay hydrated by filling your bottle instead of buying a $5+ water in the airport.
