8) Kaieteur Falls, Guyana
The Kaieteur Falls are located on the Potaro River in central Guyana on the north-east stretch of South America. Kaiteur Falls is four times taller than Canada’s Niagara and is composed of a 741 foot stream of water that slides effortlessly from the Potaro River into a forested chasm below. The falls were named after a Patamona Indian named Kai who, legend has it, sacrificed himself to the great spirit, Makonaima to save his tribe by paddling over the falls. A trip to the Kaieteur Falls is only for the truly adventurous as the trip to get there over land takes at least three days although there is a private airstrip nearby.
