3) Malta
By western standards, Malta is a reasonably priced Mediterranean island getaway. Lying off the southern coast of Sicily, Malta is an independent country with a fun combination of cultures. There are many islands that compose Malta, but only three are inhabited; Malta, Gozo, and Kemmuna. Despite its EU membership, Malta still a developing country, which is why prices here are cheaper. Gozo is the least expensive of the three. On Gozo, there are many historical sites to see. Visit the Citadella, Cathedral of Gozo, and Saint George’s Basilica. Then it’s beach time. The shores here aren’t white and sandy, but the rocky coastline creates some spectacular scenery. Head to picturesque Dwejra Bay to see the jagged rocks that create the “Azure Window.” Meals can be had in basic restaurants for about $12, and alcohol prices are lower than the rest of Europe. Apartments by the sea start at $45/night.
