It’s no secret that South East Asia is a cheap destination when compared to western standards, and Thailand is king of the Backpacker Budget-Friendly category. For decades, penny pinching vacationers and travelers have used the Land of Smiles for luxurious holidays. Bangkok is your main arrival hub, and from here one of the closest islands to hop to is Koh Chang. Transportation is cheap in Thailand, so expect to spend roughly $10 for a bus/ferry combo ticket. Koh Chang has amazing sunsets, miles of beaches, and a laid-back vibe. Basic bungalows start between $10-$15/night. Eat at the local mom and pop shops and pay a couple bucks for a meal. The local beer, Leo and Chang, is another $1. After Koh Chang, why not head to the island of Koh Tao? It’s one of the cheapest places in the world to get your scuba certification!
