7) Meyer May House
This is one of the most striking secret locations that Michigan has to offer. Frank Lloyd Wright was renowned for his Prairie House series, and this house located on Madison Avenue in Grand Rapids is one of the most beautiful examples. Wright designed the house in the early 1900’s for a wealthy clothier, Meyer S. May and his wife. The style was considered to be especially bold, and was in direct contrast to the Victorian and Neoclassical house designs which were preferred at the time. Acquired by the Steelcase Corporation, the house has been completely restored—the only one of Wright’s houses to be so—and has been open to the public since 1987. The exterior and interior have been painstakingly recreated to the specifications that Wright had originally produced. The result is an incredible experience of simplicity and beauty in the manner that only Wright could achieve.
