When the tread on your tires gets too shallow from wear (2/32 inches minimum depth), you need to replace the tires in order to continue driving the car safely. Figuring out what kind of tires fit both your needs and budget is an important part of maintenance. Different cars sometimes use different types of tires, and driving conditions should impact your choice as well. For instance, if you drive only in mild weather conditions on smoothly paved roads, there is no need to buy tires meant for driving through heavy snow or off-road conditions. If you use bigger and bulkier tires than necessary, they may end up bringing down your gas mileage.
