11) Minnesota
It’s important to time your visit to Minnesota properly. This state is cursed with some of the worst weather in the country. Visiting in summer is strongly advised! The Land of 10,000 Lakes will have you worshipping its picture perfection during a sunny day on the water. Into boat tie-up parties and lots of drinking? Minnesota’s got that. Craving some privacy in a lakeside cabin? They’ve got that, too. Take a cruise on North Shore Scenic Drive, a gorgeous, 142-mile stretch of road weaving through forest and along cliff tops and beaches. With Lake Superior on one side and the mountains on the other, you’ll be treated to amazing views on either side. There are camping, hiking, canoeing’ and rock climbing opportunities along the way. Also worthwhile: Split Rock Lighthouse (a National Historic Landmark) and the National Eagle Center – a non-profit agency dedicated to protecting these birds.
