6) South Dakota
Located in the northern Midwest and known for being sparsely populated, South Dakota has found itself on the unpopular list. The state receives 13.9 million visitors a year. This is surprising considering one of America’s most iconic national landmarks sits within its bounds. Mount Rushmore is popular with tourists and is probably the reason many people come to South Dakota in the first place. But there’s a lot more to this state than the famous mountain carving. A must-visit place is Badlands National Park, which has some of the most unusual sandstone and shale landscapes in the U.S. Spearfish Canyon is also a state treasure with miles of forests, waterfalls, creeks, rivers and the most idyllic picnic spots on the planet. South Dakota can be kind of kooky, too. Here is where you’ll find the world’s only Corn Palace. Clearly this state is proud of its farming roots.
