Business Insider took an in depth look at what attracts visitors to these most desirous destinations, and why. The data was compiled from a hotel booking site infographic created by HotelsCombined. Some of the most desired places many seem obvious. Others may surprise you. For example, California came in number one ahead of New York. Virginia may be for lovers, but not West Virginia. It was dead last on the list of all 50 states. That being said, you’re probably wondering what came in between. Here are the top 11 states that people want to visit the most.

1) California

It seems many travelers are “California Dreamin’.” Whether it’s visions of Hollywood, seeing the grandeur of Yosemite National Park, or crossing the majestic Golden Gate Bridge, many people have dreams of going to California. Over 250 million a year to be precise! If you’re one such dreamer, there’s plenty to do and see. You’ll encounter many fascinating sights along historic Highway 1, which runs the length of the coast. If long drives aren’t your thing, there are a multitude of guided tours in every part of California. Being such a vast state, you may not see it all in one trip.
