3) Mount Desert Island, Maine
Locally known as MDI, this island is another picturesque northeastern getaway. Mount Desert Island got its name from the highest peak, Cadillac Mountain, which is completely barren of trees. Over 100 square miles, Mount Desert Island is the third largest island on the eastern seaboard. It’s also a nature-lovers dream. The mountains meet the sparkling sea, making this an ideal place to chill out and enjoy the great outdoors in the spring, summer, or fall. Bike riding, boating, and hiking are just a few of the activities in which to partake. MDI also includes the famous summer holiday town of Bar Harbor. Locals and foreigners come to enjoy the beer tasting, fishing, and nature trails. The majority of neighboring Acadia National Park crosses over into MDI as well, giving visitors another item to check off the New England bucket list. Even Martha Stewart has a summer cottage here!
