11) Mackinac Island, Michigan
This island oozes old-fashioned charm, giving visitors the feeling they’ve just been catapulted back to the 1950s. Mackinac is known for its homemade fudge, and (thankfully) offers ways to burn off the extra calories. Discover Mackinac State Park, which covers 80% of the island. The 70-miles of dirt and paved trails around the island are easily explored by bicycle. Not up for that much physical activity? Horse-drawn carriages and buggies are available to rent. Kayaking and boating is another great way to view the natural beauty and explore the Straits of Mackinac. No visitor should miss the Grand Hotel. It’s a bit pricey to book a room here, but you can visit for High Tea, a fancy dinner, or lounge on the world’s longest Victorian-style porch. Visit Mackinac Island in summer, as winters will get quite cold.
