Virginia’s only resort island draws travelers to its shores for several reasons. Many people flock here to see the annual Pony Swim. Every July, over a hundred wild ponies swim from neighboring Assateague Island to Chincoteague Island for a pony auction and festival. This is an ancient tradition that dates back to the 1700s. Exploration is easy on this 7-mile-by-3-mile island. Rent a bike and cruise the beginner trails. Take off for a day of wildlife spotting on the Island Nature Trail and experience the joys of an untouched natural environment. Do as the locals do and try your hand at crabbing or clamming.
