9) Bolivia
No thrill-seeking trip to Bolivia is complete without a ride on the Death Road. Yungas Road, which dates back to the 1930s, was built to connect La Paz to Coroico. The mountain road cuts through precipitous terrain along drops thousands of feet high. Buses full of people have plummeted over the edges while taking hairpin turns at fast speeds. One man reported being one of the only survivors of a bus accident when it went over the edge. After his recovery in a local hospital, he boarded a bus to return home and survived a second accident when that bus went over as well. The road has been vastly improved over the last 20 years rendering it safer, but now it’s a huge draw for cycling tours. The ride promises to get the heart pumping, but even with all the safety improvements, not every cyclist survives the trip!
