If your idea of adventure is to be truly alone and away from civilization, a stay at the Don Sheldon Mountain House in Alaska is a must. Pioneer aviator Don Sheldon constructed the cabin above Ruth Gorge in 1966, which is only accessible by ski-equipped airplane. Up to six adults can sleep in the cabin, and larger parties can pitch a tent along the ridge. The website warns, “The Mountain House is suitable for the adventurous spirit who can live comfortably without any modern conveniences and take care of themselves without a guide. YOU MUST BE PHYSICALLY FIT AND MENTALLY FLEXIBLE.” Because there is a possibility of inclement weather, guests are strongly encouraged to take extra food and medication.
