4) Luray Caverns
When you visit Luray Caverns you will be seeing the largest caverns in the eastern United States. Located in the gorgeous Shenandoah Valley, the caverns were discovered in the late 1870’s and are renowned for the cave formations that will astonish you with their beauty. Mud flows, stalactites (formations from the ceilings), stalagmites (formations from the ground) and mirrored pools offer you one of the most breathtaking underground experiences you’re ever likely to have. One of the most memorable sights is the Great Stalacpipe Organ, the largest known musical instrument made entirely from stalactites. Saracen’s tent is also awe-inspiring, and is regarded as one of the best formed flowstones, or draperies, in the world. Tours are conducted to help guarantee you appreciate all of the 1.5m (2.4km) path. Remember, though, you are underground; so, sometimes things might get a bit slippery. For those who are tall, you also might have to squat down sometimes.
