5) Twin Sisters Rock
This interestingly shaped geographical formation is comprised of two basalt pillars which jut up from another rock. The natural landmark looks out over the Columbia river, so it’s worth a visit just for that view. According to geologists it was formed at the end of the Ice Age, as the result of erosion. The Cayuse legend is far more interesting, claiming that a Coyote spirit fell in love with three sisters and turned two of them into stone, while the third became a cave. Whatever the truth is, this rock and the walking trail around it will take you through some astonishing natural beauty. The trail is a relatively easy walk, surrounded by some lovely desert flora and a view over the Wallula Gap. If you’re interested in geology, even better, because this walk is full of natural rock formations.
