11) Roswell, New Mexico

A strange thing happened in Roswell, New Mexico in 1947. A ranch owner discovered unusual debris on his property and informed the authorities. The intelligence officer on the scene declared it the remains of a UFO. The local newspaper blasted the news of the flying object debris across the front page, and that’s when things got weird. U.S. military officials insisted the debris had merely been the remains of a weather balloon that had met a premature fate. This was the accepted theory until the 1970s. Enter: conspiracy theories. Tales were told that the government has covered up a UFO crash during which aliens had been recovered.
