Modesto has tripled in size in a very short period of time. You would think a boon like this would be good for a city. However, such a large population growth means that the city may have been ill equipped to handle such a population boost. This often results in a lack of available jobs, poverty and crime. Modesto has seen all of these problems and more.
First off, Modesto was ranked high in U.S. cities for most miserable places to live. In California, it is listed by the FBI as one of the top five most dangerous communities to live in. While the leaders in Modesto are trying hard to overcome the stigma, many residents just move on and find a more fitting place to live. The current poverty, crime, and frequent reminders that you could lose a vehicle are probably a good indication to just stay away.
