Venezuela is the location of Angel Falls (Salto Angel), the world’s highest waterfall, the beaches of Isla Margarita, Mount Roraima and stunning architecture. The town of Merida is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts with ample opportunities to hike, raft and paraglide. The coastal town of Coro is a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its crumbling colonial buildings and historic mansions. Medanos de Coro National Park is a standout feature due to its sand dunes in an otherwise tropical country. The Andes Mountains even extend over the border out of Colombia. Unfortunately, Venezuela also has the world’s highest crime rate, and one of the highest murder rates. Violent crime is common throughout the country, and there is a great deal of social unrest due to shortages of food, medicine and electricity.
