Kiev is a beautiful city of cathedrals and museums. Odessa is a seaside city of Mediterranean architecture drawing tourists from all over the world. The Carpathian Mountains, which reach from the Czech Republic to Romania and through Ukraine, are filled with opportunities to hike, ski and go mountain biking. Unfortunately, Crimea, home to many beach resorts and historical sites is no longer safe. The region near the Russian border including Donetsk and Luhansk, as well as the Crimean Peninsula, are held by Russian-supported separatists. Thousands have died in the fighting, and both sides of the line are covered in landmines. People passing through separatist checkpoints have been detained and kidnapped and no one entering from Russia is allowed into government-controlled territory, not even Americans. Travelers are warned to avoid large crowds and demonstrations.
