7) Turkey
The cosmopolitan city of Istanbul, the Hagia Sophia, the Aegean Coast, and the incredible rock formations of Cappadocia are just a few of the reasons tourists flock to Turkey. It’s a fascinating country that was forged by the Persian, Greek, Roman, Byzantine and Ottoman empires. Unfortunately, it is also the site of terrorist activity by ISIS, and is especially volatile near the Syrian border. The U.S. State Department urges citizens to “avoid travel to southeast Turkey and carefully consider the risks of travel to and throughout the country.” Americans have been explicitly targeted by extremists, particularly in Istanbul. There have been attacks with car bombs and by suicide bombers in Istanbul and Ankara, including one at the Istanbul airport in June 2016 which killed 45 people.
