8) Honduras
The Roatan and Bay Islands are extremely popular with tourists and frequently featured on shows like “House Hunters International.” However, the crime rate there is much lower than the mainland, where travelers can see such sites as the ruins of Copan, a Mayan civilization, and La Tigra National Park. The U.S. State Department warns that “the level of kidnapping, crime, and violence in Honduras remains critically high.” It also has one of the highest murder rates in the world. Thirty-seven Americans have been killed there since 2011 and cases are rarely solved since the government lacks the resources to deal with crime. Criminals have posed as law enforcement to commit robberies and car-jackings on highways, and drug trafficking is common. Gracias a Dios is a particularly dangerous region due to its remoteness.
