Visitors to New York are spell-bound by the bright lights of Time Square, diverse food culture, world-class performances on Broadway and infectious hustle and bustle of the Big Apple, the world’s most iconic metropolis.
But New York is also home to some notable ski slopes. From expert skiers who tackle double black diamond runs in their sleep to the nervous first-timers who just want to stay on their skis through one green circle trail, New York’s ski resorts have it all. From the almighty Hunter Mountain and Wyndham Mountain Resort in the Catskills Mountain Range to the conveniently located Belleayre to the huge Gore Mountain range in the Adirondacks, New York State is home to some impressive ski destinations, all accessible from the big city.
1) Thunder Ridge
A petite ski resort located just an hour and fifteen minute drive from New York City, Thunder Ridge Ski Resort is located in Patterson, New York. Popular with East Coast skiers and skateboarders, Thunder Ridge may lack in size but excels in laid-back charm and family-friendly atmosphere. It’s no Lake Placid or Whistler Mountain but Thunder Ridge offers 21 runs over a skiable area of 90 acres, covered in a fine layer of both real and man-made snow. Its kid-friendly ski school is popular with families and there’s even a babysitting service at a reasonable hourly rate. Open at night, Thunder Ridge is a favourite spot for high school ski racing and you can stay at the resort overnight at one of several hotels.
