4) Yangtze River
Here’s a river cruise for the senior who wants to experience something really unusual—travelling down the world’s 3rd largest river. The ancient Yangtze is actually made up of northern, middle, and southern sections, each of which has its own name. Tour companies have been operating since the late 1950’s; and there is real choice when it comes to itineraries. You can visit Xi’an, and the Terracotta Warriors; or journey between Guilin and Yangshuo along the nearby Li River, and catch sight of scenery that will simply astound your senses. It will be a slow but more intimate experience of China, its geography, people, and cuisine. Travel times are flexible, but you should avoid December. You can embark/disembark along the northern section at Chongqing or Yichang, the middle section at Wuhan; or the southern section at Nanjing or Shanghai.
