9) Krakow
Although Poland has had a difficult history, it is still one of Europe’s must see cities. The city’s medieval beauty and war-ravaged culture inspire many to put Krakow high on their East European travel itinerary. History buffs understand the major role this once-walled city played during the era of Germany’s Third Reich and Nazism.
Visiting one of the city’s concentration camps, while not at the top of your list, may prove to be one of the more interesting experiences you’ll have in Krakow. Equally fascinating but decidedly more pleasant is a visit to Rynek Glówny, a huge market and site of Cloth Hall, a Renaissance-era trading outpost. While there, don’t miss nearby St. Mary’s Basilica, a 14th-century Gothic church.
