2) Lincoln’s Birth Cabin, Hodgenville, KY
In 1909, President Theodore Roosevelt, laid the cornerstone for a memorial building, exclaiming he was preserving Lincoln’s birth cabin. In reality, the original cabin was disassembled around 1865. Local rumor held the logs were used to build another home nearby. In 1894, New York businessman, A.W. Dennett purchased the Lincoln Farm and used logs from the house that was there at that time to construct a replica of Lincoln’s original log cabin. Soon that cabin was dismantled and re-erected for exhibition in many cities around the country. That replica is now housed in the memorial building. The dedication took place in 1911 by President William Howard Taft. The Lincoln Farm association purchased what they thought were the original logs from Lincoln’s birth home. What they discovered was, when assembled, it did not fit properly in the memorial, which made visitation difficult because it was considerably larger than the original.
