8) Secure the Final Offer
While we already stated that being the first to volunteer is in your best interest, there is one drawback to being too eager. If the airline is having a difficult time finding volunteers, they will increase the amount of compensation every few minutes as an incentive for people to step forward. They really want to avoid an involuntary bump – removing people from the flight who have not volunteered. This creates unhappy customers and is bad for business, as we’ve seen in the recent news. We still recommend you be first to volunteer to secure your spot, but be sure to inquire if you will get the final offer if they continue to raise the incentive. This is really the only fair way to do it, so the airline should agree.
