3) Show Your Willingness to be Bumped
Go to your gate early and talk to the agent (usually someone will appear 45 – 60 minutes before boarding). Politely let them know you’re willing to give up your seat should the need arise. Have the agent write your name down, then sit and wait patiently. Typically, airlines won’t know until boarding has already begun if they’ve over-booked. Remember, they’re gambling on the chance that some people won’t show. Once they realize they’ve overbooked, they’ll start asking for volunteers. If you’ve let the gate agent know ahead of time, your name will be first on the list, increasing your chances of reeling in a sweet deal. The agent will appreciate the fact you offered ahead of time, possibly resulting in smaller perks in addition to the main prize.
