3) Newport, Rhode Island
Also known as “the city by the sea,” it’s a beach lover’s paradise. Newport offers a variety of beautiful beaches and seaside attractions for the summer enthusiast. On 10-miles of coastline awaits a magnificent drive along her beautiful shores. The choices of breathtaking beaches are many, and the dining and lodging choices are top notch. For the active visitor, check out Newport Cliff Walk – a 3.5 mile public walking trail on the shore of Aquidneck Island. From there you’ll also be treated to stunning views of the historic Gilded Age Newport mansions. You can even (carefully) go swimming right off the cliffs. The historic Fort Adams is a National Historic Landmark that has been inactive since 1950. It is now home to historic tours, and is well known for its summer attractions and activities, including the famous Newport Folk and Jazz Festivals.
