6) Empire State Building, New York City

Its construction during the Great Depression started in March of 1930 and gave jobs to many workers at a time of desperation in America. It began as a competition between the Chrysler Corporation and General Motors to construct the tallest building. People were astounded at the speed in which it was built. By October of 1930, 88 floors had been completed and there were 14 more to go. Workers kept up the swift pace due to the beams and windows being transported by trains directly from the factories. Today, it’s an historic landmark as well as an iconic symbol of New York City. It’s been a sought-after location for filmmakers since its completion in 1931. More than 250 movie scenes have been shot in and around it. Among the most notable films are King Kong, An Affair to Remember, Annie Hall, Sleepless in Seattle, and Elf.
