Guatemala often gets passed up for the better-known nearby countries like Costa Rica, Panama, and Mexico. However, losing the Central American popularity contest is one of the reasons Guatemala gets points in the first place. It’s less developed and over-run than the others, making it more authentic. Antigua is an old colonial city that’s managed to hold onto its charm despite pressures of modern times. The city is worth a wander for the architecture alone. It’s also a great jumping off point for volcano hikes and village market excursions. Visit Lake Atitlan and explore the local Mayan villages and mountain trails. Don’t forget the ancient Mayan ruins (Tikal), tucked away in the depths of the Guatemalan jungle. On average, hostel beds start at $15/night. Thrifty travelers should make their own food since market produce is the cheapest. Go out to eat and expect to spend anywhere from $6 – $15.
