3) King’s Park Psychiatric Center – King’s Park, New York

Created in 1885 before humans really settled into Long Island Land, the King’s Park Psychiatric center was separate from civilization. It was self-sufficient, as patients worked independently from the outside world growing their own food and supplying the labor needed to keep the facility running. As time progressed, patient treatment moved into increasingly disturbing treatments, such as shock therapy. More troubling treatments used included lobotomy, where a metal rod would be penetrated through the eye into the brain, creating a “zombie” like state. This allowed once aggressive patients to be more easily controlled. As new drugs to help mental illness were introduced in the 1950s, the over 9000 patient number began to decrease. By the 1980s and 1990s, the facility no longer had the needed demand, shutting down and leading to the release of patients who continued to be mentally ill. Unequipped to handle the working world, these inhabitants would often become homeless or incarcerated. The torturous sounding treatment has led many to believe the place in haunted with angered souls.
