6) Haines Shoe House – York, Pennsylvania

Constructed in 1948, it originally served as an extravagant advertising campaign for the Haines Shoe Company. Now, this quirky roadside wonder attracts visitors from all over the world. Modeled after a work-boot, the house stands 25 feet tall and consists of five stories. Mahlon Haines commissioned the design by handing a work-boot to an architect and requesting a house be built based on the style. The living room is in the toe. The kitchen is in the heel. There are two bedrooms in the ankle and a gourmet ice cream shop is inside the instep. The grounds also include a shoe-shaped dog house. Guided tours are offered seasonally where visitors learn the history of this amazing shoe house. Guests are invited to bring their cameras and the tour concludes with gourmet ice cream and hand-made treats. The grounds include pet-friendly picnic areas, free WiFi and the Shoe House gift shop.
