5) Lake Toxaway, North Carolina
With 14 miles of pristine shoreline, Lake Toxaway is the largest private lake in North Carolina. Located in the western part of the state, it’s surrounded by the Nanthala and Pisgah National Forests. With its clear crystal waters and invigorating mountain breezes, it covers 14 miles of scenic accessible shoreline on a 640-acre mountain oasis setting. It’s been designated a purely recreational lake. Situated at an elevation of 2,929 feet, outdoor activities are in abundance here. Here, you can experience the “Land of Waterfalls” with hundreds of waterfalls and miles of hiking trails. Explore the lake by kayak, canoe or an evening champagne cruise aboard the famous Miss Lucy. Horseback riding, hiking, river tubing and whitewater rafting are among the many other adventures here.
