9) Bronx Zoo

The Bronx Zoo is the the largest metropolitan zoo in the United States and one of the largest in the world. Bronx Park is situated in the Bronx, a borough of New York City. Once inside the park, you’d never know that you’re surrounded by a city. The park comprises 265 acres of parkland, so plan to spend the day and wear comfortable walking shoes. You’ll be treated to an amazing array of animals in their natural habitats and many free exhibits which are accessible under a general admission ticket. The zoo is home to more than 650 species of animals, many of which are either endangered or in threat of becoming endangered. The animal population is currently about 4,000 in total. Exhibits include African Plains which features The Carter Giraffe Building with indoor/outdoor viewing of the zoo’s giraffes and southern ostriches. Among the many other exhibits are the Baboon Reserve, Big Bears, Himalayan Highlands, Madagascar, the Mouse House, World of Reptiles, Tiger Mountain, numerous bird aviary’s and even a Bison range. If you’re visiting with kids, don’t forget the Children’s Zoo and the Butterfly Garden where you can stroll through meadows to watch the butterflies up close.
