7) Sagamore Hill

When Theodore (“Teddy”) Roosevelt was president, his home in Oyster Bay Cove on Long Island became known as “The Summer White House” during the seven summers he spent there as president from 1885 until his death in 1919. A native of Manhattan, he grew to love the area where he spent summers with his family in his youth for the opportunities of hiking, rowing, swimming and riding. While in office, Roosevelt entertained many foreign dignitaries at Sagamore Hill, which is the Algonquin word for chieftain. Today, visitors are treated to a tour of the 23-room home, which has been preserved in its original Queen Anne style. On July 25, 1962, Congress established Sagamore Hill as a National Historic Site to preserve the house and its 83 acres as a unit of the National Park Service. The site also contains the Theodore Roosevelt Museum, which chronicles his life and career as the 26th President.
