A prominent and well-known New York City landmark, St. Patrick’s Cathedral is adorned in Neo-Gothic Roman style architecture. No matter what your religious or spiritual beliefs, you’re sure to be mesmerized upon entering its majestic steps. The cornerstone of the original cathedral was laid in 1858 but building was halted during the Civil War. The construction, which was paid for by thousands of poor immigrants, along with 103 prominent citizens who each pledged $1,000, resumed in 1865. Her doors were finally swept open in 1879. Over the course of many years, additions and adornments have been added to this majestic structure. Restoration of the exterior was completed in 1979, in time for its 100th anniversary. Over the years the cathedral has received many prominent visitors and has been featured in several major motion pictures. Guided tours are available which offer visitors a deeper understanding of the cathedral’s history and architecture.
