9) Rotterdam, Netherlands
Rotterdam is a place to start when you are exploring the Netherlands. Since the city was destroyed during WWII, it had to be completely rebuilt. This makes it almost impossible to locate any of its old medieval buildings. However, there is one building worth visiting that remains and this is the Great St. Lawrence Church. It is the last remaining medieval building in Rotterdam.
Only an hour drive from Amsterdam, many mature travelers find Rotterdam more appealing. If you are interested in seeing the iconic windmills of the Netherlands, venture just 30 minutes outside of Rotterdam to Kenderdijk. It provides for great photo opportunities. Rotterdam is also known for its arts scene and year round festivals, most of which are free. Save money by visiting local museums on Wednesday when admission is free.
