10) Caribou, Maine
It’s so far north, you’d expect to see Santa flying across the midnight sky. But a trip to Caribou is worth the effort if you love nature and views of that very mystical night sky. It’s as far north as you can get in the continental US. And surely, you’d like to see more than an old elf flying across the night sky. If you’re into hiking, Caribou has over 1,000 miles of marked trails. Giant snow sculpture’s highlight winter festivals, and arts and crafts are the are the name of the day in spring. Caribou is, however, one of the only places to witness the magic of the aurora borealis on the east coast of the United States. Also known as the Northern Lights, the magic of this night time phenomenon is a spectacle for children of all ages. It’s certainly not something you’d want to miss if you’ve ventured this far north. As a matter of fact, it’s most likely the main reason you’d come here, and well worth the trip for sure.
