2) Painted Canyons
A hidden gem within the Mecca Hills Recreation Area in California, the Painted Canyons were formed a couple hundred years ago as a result of a shift in the San Andreas Fault. They get their artistic name from their color-washed walls, which feature shades of pink, green, red, brown and more. Apart from the various colors, the canyon itself is fascinating with its high walls, narrow gorges and exposed layers. If you’re into exploring, you can hike along the graded road that runs the length of the canyon and even break off into the narrow side canyons if you’re feeling extra adventurous. Visitors report that the gorge remains a comfortable, cool temperature throughout the day.  With a packed lunch and a camera in hand, you can enjoy the whole day exploring one of California’s finest places.
