10) Mount Whitney
For mountain lovers, California is home to the lower 48’s tallest peak, Mount Whitney. The height of this majestic mountain is an awe-inspiring sight. It’s definitely a photo destination for photographers. Located on the eastern side of the Great Western Divide, Mount Whitney is best viewed from the Interagency Visitor Center off Highway 395. Perhaps the most climbed peak in the entire United States, this towering mountain can only be climbed by those with a permit. If you’re considering the climb, the best route to the summit is via the Mount Whitney Trail. It is a challenging 22-mile round trip with an elevation change of 6,100 feet. While climbing the mountain is quite an experience, its beauty can be just as well appreciated from ground level.
