9) Churchill, Manitoba
This small town of 1,000 residents certainly packs a punch. The polar bear capital of the world is one of the only human settlements allowing people the chance for an up-close encounter with a polar bear. The specialized tundra vehicles tour the Hudson Bay as the polar bears gather to cross the iced-over body of water. You can even embark on a wilderness hike to witness the rugged, subarctic terrain on a more personal level. After the ice melts, Beluga whale-watching is another uniquely-Churchill activity. If you can brave the chilly waters, you’ll even have the chance to kayak and snorkel with these incredible mammals. Rather stay dry? Take off into the subarctic terrain tundra and forest for some excellent bird-watching opportunities. As if that wasn’t enough, Churchill is among the top three places in the world to witness the Aurora Borealis, also known as the Northern Lights.
