8. The USS Lexington – Corpus Christi
Another historic site to visit while in Texas is actually a floating museum, the USS Lexington. This CV-16 vintage Essex-class aircraft carrier was nicknamed “The Blue Ghost” by Tokyo Rose (Japanese propaganda radio host). With the ship declared sunk four times by the Japanese and its dark blue camouflage coloring, it is a true icon from World War II. The museum includes different family activities including a 3D mega theater that hosts a movie about aircraft carriers, a scale model exhibit, virtual interactive battle station games, flight simulators and a Pearl Harbor exhibit. All of these different activities are also available to those who participate in the overnight campouts offered by the ship. The ship is considered haunted and there are definitely unexplained noises reported by those who have stayed aboard. For fans of history and haunted houses, make sure to visit during October to attend their Haunting on the Blue Ghost.
