48) WEST VIRGINIA
The Greenbrier Hotel and Resort in the Allegheny Mountains of West Virginia has been welcoming travelers since 1778. Resting on over 10,000 acres, there are 710 guest rooms, 20 restaurants and lounges, more than 55 indoor and outdoor activities and sports, and 36 retail shops. A virtual city unto itself, there are over fifty scheduled activities daily. One of the most fascinating reasons to stay at the Greenbrier is the bunker under the West Virginia Wing. Construction was finished in 1961 on this 122,000-square-foot complex, built 720 feet into the hillside. The bunker was originally built to house the government in cases of national emergency. Tours are given daily by courteous staff with full knowledge of its history. The rooms are luxurious and well appointed. However, there is so much to do at and around The Greenbrier, you won’t be in your room much!
