9) Kelimutu, Indonesia
Kelimutu is most known for its island, Flores, home to the three colored lakes. The lakes are a unique side effect of the volcano on which they sit. At times the lakes look as if they are boiling. The volcanic activity can make all three lakes that sit right beside each other different colors at the same time.
While one may be blue, the other can be brown or even red. It is certainly a majestic experience for travelers. This destination must be a pin on a nature lover’s traveling map. The locals in the area believe that the lakes along with the thick fog that is often present over the lakes in the mornings are a result of supernatural beings. The flora in Kelimutu is unique to the area. Hikers are sure to see ferns, casuarinas, red wood, and edelweiss. So visitors can expect to get exposed to some beautiful vegetation and some fantastic local stories and customs regarding the area.
