8) Siem Reap, Cambodia
Cambodia is one of the cheapest places in Southeast Asia to stretch the American dollar. In fact, most establishments accept USD as local currency, making it even easier and cheaper to travel the country. Much of Cambodia is still struggling to recover from the devastating effects of the Khmer Rouge regime, but nonetheless remains a fascinating country. Its history is heart-breaking, but the people are resilient and welcome travelers. The Angkor Wat Temple complex, located in Siem Reap, is Cambodia’s biggest claim to fame. Explore the world’s largest religious monument (some temples dating back to the 9th century!) by bike, rentable for a couple bucks a day. Other activities in Siem Reap include fishing village tours, cooking classes, and ceramic class – all under $20. Hostel stays can be booked for under $10 a night, meals are $2-$5, and beer can be found for less than $1.
