5) Mexico
Mexico has long been the cheapest tropical getaway for Americans. However, due to its popularity, famous places like Cabo San Lucas and Cancun have raised their prices to take advantage of the masses. While you can still visit these places cheaply, it requires more effort. Your best bet is to head to the smaller beach towns. Places like Sayulita and Puerto Escondido on the west coast remain chilled-out surfer’s paradises – and luckily this is reflected in the prices. These destinations still bring in the tourists, but lunching on tacos and beer for $5 at family run restaurants is definitely doable. Then, there’s La Paz. Located on the east coast of the Baja Peninsula surrounded by beautiful nature. It’s a great place for scuba diving, sailing, and eco-tours. Food and drink remain relatively cheap here when compared to the more “popular” areas.
